While composting food scraps has many benefits to the environment, some part of the benefit may be offset by the need to haul food scraps long distances. The District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (aka “the DMV”) area has only two commercial composting sites: one in Prince George’s County, the other in Manassas. To create more capacity for processing food scraps into compost in the DMV and bring composting options to other communities, Compost Crew introduced the Compost Outpost®. We now have the ability to build and operate one of these composting sites for your farm, municipality or organization.
The Compost Outpost®
The Compost Outpost® is a new modular composting site developed by Compost Crew and designed with the help of composting guru, Benny Erez, and local nonprofit urban teaching and learning farm, ECO City Farms. The Compost Outpost® can be rapidly deployed in a variety of locations to promote distributed composting in the DMV and create closed loop systems for food scraps and other organic materials. The first Compost Outpost® was built in the summer of 2020 at One Acre Farm in Dickerson, Maryland in northern Montgomery County. Construction took less than two months. Our Compost Outpost® construction continues as we add composting sites to Butler’s Orchard, located in Germantown, Maryland and ECO City Farms in Bladensburg, Maryland.

The Compost Outpost® is ideal for:
|Community gardens||Municipal waste facilities|
|Corporate campuses||And more…|
The Compost Outpost® can be installed with less than a quarter acre of land and can be deployed in a variety of configurations to meet the needs of the client. Compost Crew will build and operate the site for a fee, while the host benefits from a ready supply of compost.
